What is design?
Design is the visual equivalent of musical composition. A series of content related components are assembled into an end product which communicates at a far higher level than the combined value of its component parts alone ever could.
And, just as with music, there is great design that you never forget and the rest is just the visual equivalent of elevator music.
"If you think that good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad design."
Dr. Ralf Speth. CEO. Jaguar Land Rover.
Why do we need good design?
Advances in technology have made the technology necessary to execute once difficult creative tasks such as video production, photography, creative writing and page layout available at a fraction of the cost. Today a host of inexpensive online software solutions have made becoming a 'designer' accessible to everyone. No training or formal experience required. Today good design is no longer expensive but it has become elusive.
As for the cost of bad design, it is now hidden in plain sight.
The downside to relying on Canva, design templates and Grammerly is homogenisation. Ever get confused between two age care providers, both with logos which feature generic hands forming hearts?
The cost of bad design and poor communication is hidden away in missed sales, missed funding opportunities, low satisfaction scores, unachieved KPI's and poor client engagement. It only really becomes evident when it starts to negatively impact on brand reputation.
Where do I find good design?
